The State Government of Sergipe, through the State Department of Environment and Water Resources (Semarh), hired the Nippon – STCP Consortium to carry out studies and diagnosis of three sub-basins of Jacarecica River, a tributary of Sergipe River. The project identified approximately 200 springs in the three sub-basins, classifying them according to their environmental quality.
On November 14, the Consortium presented a diagnosis of the current situation of these springs to approximately 80 owners of rural areas in the Sergipe River Basin, including the Dangra River, Mata Verde River and Cajueiro dos Veados River sub-basins.
The Consortium developed standard environmental recovery projects for each spring type, to be applied according to its characteristics. These projects were well-received by the owners.
During the meeting, the importance of owners` involvement in improving water quality of the basins and that of the communities, respectively, was underlined. The project will contribute to the objectives of the “Water of Sergipe (Águas de Sergipe)” Program, aimed at restoring permanent preservation areas in the Sergipe River Basin.
