Taiji Fujisaki – IGES, Rafael Mason – CIPEM President, Sofia Hirakuri – STCP Consulting Division
On September 28, STCP Engenharia de Projetos Ltda., represented by the consultant Sofia Hirakuri and Mr. Taiji Fujisaki of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) based in Japan, visited CIPEM (Center for Timber Producers and Exporters of Mato Grosso State) and SEMA-MT (State Secretariat of Environment of Mato Grosso). The purpose of the meetings was to learn details about the control of forest products in the state of Mato Grosso, one of the largest tropical wood producing states in the Amazon region.
During the meeting, CIPEM presented information about the Sustainable Forest Management model developed in Mato Grosso, explaining aspects of environmental legislation (at federal and state level), licensing model and forestry operation activities. The interest of the Japanese government is to learn more about the origin of wood offered by the state for the international market.
At SEMA-MT, the Secretary André Baby explained the mechanisms of command and control, which involve monitoring and inspection of logging activities. According to Fujisaki, the interest of the Japanese government is envisaged in the implementation of the Clean Wood Act, which aims to promote the use and distribution of timber and timber products from a legal source.
